What is lateral testing for screw-piles?

Lateral testing – also known as lateral load testing – assesses the lateral forces required to provoke movement in an installed pile. That is, forces coming to the side of the pile. A hydraulic winch or jack is often used to pull piles towards each other and push them apart. The results of the testing will show you how much lateral force is needed to move the pile before failure.

What is the purpose of lateral load testing?

The main reason why you need to perform lateral load testing on screw piles is to establish whether the lateral load capacity of the specified screw-pile is fit for the purpose of their application. This ensures that the screw piles will remain sound in the event of severe or sustained lateral forces, which can be particularly important when projects are subject to wind loads. Solar fields, fences and walls are examples of projects where wind load is a very important design factor.  This can of particular import in areas where hurricanes and other extreme weather conditions are common. As can often be the case with the coastal construction or installation of solar fields.

How to conduct lateral load testing on screw piles

There are a couple of different options for conducting lateral load testing on screw piles.

  • For larger projects, you may wish to employ a dedicated testing company. They will use a load cell arrangement and displacement sensors, with strain gauges embedded into each pile. A computer will then record the data provided by the strain gauges during testing.   
  • You can also use concrete blocks and a hydraulic jack. But it is essential to seek expert advice before attempting to conduct this form of lateral testing.

Lateral testing is integral to successful and long-lasting screw pile installation. By assessing the sideways load-bearing capability of the piles, it ensures that the piles are fit for purpose both now and in the longer term. Avoiding waste, expense, and potential danger.
